Introduction

This manuscript and photographs were deposited into the
Archives by Reynold Sawatzky, Goshen, Indiana in 1992. This
collection focusses on Sawatzky's service with Mennonite
Central Committee as director of material aid, 1951-53, in
Germany. Note also further records found in the section on
Material Aid, Europe, MCC Collection (IX-19-7).

Sawatzky has also written a family history of his
parents, Out From the Prairie: The History of the Family of
Jacob and Cornelia (Klassen) Sawatzky, compiled and edited
by Reynold Sawatzky, (Milford, Indiana: Kosko Printers,
1987).

Menno Simons Plaque, Wuestenfeld, Germany, 1940s
Includes photograph of Menno Simons' Monument at
Wuestenfeld, Germany, ca. 1940s: "Menno Simons, 1492-
1559.". This plaque on the monument was torn down for
its metal, which was in short supply after the war.
Refugee Memorial, Luebeck, Germany, 1951
Includes photograph of refugee memorial in St.
Mary's Church, in Luebeck, Germany, which shows the
refurbished church after the war, with new stained
glass windows and the church bells sunk into the floor
where they had fallen when the church was bombed during
WW II.
Presented to Sawatzky in November 1951 by Dr.
Alfred Wiebe, a local Mennonite refugee and leader, in
appreciation of MCC aiding 7,000 German refugees from
the eastern provinces in Luebeck.
