Clara (Hooley) Hershberger, 1896-

Introduction
Born July 22, 1896 in Shipshewana, Indiana. Clara
attended Goshen College for one year, 1917-18, and
Hesston College for three years. She graduated from
Hesston in 1923 with a degree in History and Religion.
She and Guy F. Hershberger were married on August 1,
1920. Clara taught school in Iowa and in Goshen,
Indiana for a total of six years and was active in the
Christian education program of the College Mennonite
Church in Goshen for approximately forty years. Clara
served on the College Mennonite Church "Covering
Committee" and was the secretary of home interests of
the WMSC from 1957-59. She also served as president of
the Indiana-Michigan WMSA. Clara and Guy spent 1949-50
in Basel, Switzerland, where Clara worked as the
hostess at the MCC Center. While there, Clara started
the "Strickkranzli" or knitting circle which brought
together for the first time the women of the Holee
congregation and the Schenzli congregation. She has
been living at Greencroft in Goshen, Indiana since
1985.
