Introduction and Report
by Dennis Stoesz
October 5, 1998

The Archives has collected records from churches which belong to the Ohio Mennonite Conference (1834) since the archives was founded in 1937. One major emphasis has been to collect church bulletins from each church since bulletins began to be used on a regular basis in 1948. Since the 1950s, churches have produced many more types of records, like newsletters, church directories, annual reports, etc., and some of these materials are also found in individual church collections. Older church records have also been collected and added to the appropriate collection through-out these years. The oldest records date from the 1850s but there is also one book of sermons from around 1751 (Oak Grove, Smithville).

The summary of congregational records below provides a general indication of materials found in each church's collection. Please note, however, that the summary is not complete since titles of specific files (inventories) have not yet been completed for every church. The list also reflects only paper records, since time did not permit to check the photographs, tapes or artifacts, which are often cataloged as separate archival units. I should also note that other relevant background materials for specific churches may exist as part of other collections in the Archives, for example, in a pastor's collection. This list also does not indicate archival records which are found with the individual congregations.

This list of congregations and their church records was produced to evaluate the effectiveness of managing, collecting and preserving congregational records by the Archives, the Historical Committees and the individual churches. Based on this listing, I would like to report the following:

Congregations actively depositing in Archives (last 5 years):  20
Congregations with a collection but are not currently depositing:  36
Congregations which have not deposited materials:  28
Extinct congregations (or no longer part of Ohio Conference):  12
Dual affiliated congregations (MC / GC):
Sending in materials (2); Inactive (2); Sending none (2)
 6
Total Number of congregations:  84

Updated list of churches was provided by the Ohio Mennonite Conference, 1998. Additional information on founding dates comes from the Mennonite Yearbook, 1997 and from the "List of Current and Extinct Congregations" by Wilmer Swope, as it appears in Mennonites of the Ohio and Eastern Conference: From Colonial Period in Pennsylvania to 1968, by Grant M. Stoltzfus (Scottdale, PA: Herald Press, 1969). See also The Hispanic Mennonite Church in North America, 1932-1982, by Rafael Falcon (Scottdale, PA: Herald Press, 1986), and The Black Mennonite Church in North America, 1886-1986, by Le Roy Bechler (Scottdale, PA: Herald Press, 1986). Another good resource for early Ohio Mennonite history is John S. Umble's Ohio Mennonite Sunday Schools (Scottdale, PA: Herald Press, 1941)
