Illinois Mennonite Churches, 1833-1992

Congregational Records found at the Archives of the Mennonite Church
1700 South Main Street, Goshen, Indiana USA 46526

Introduction and Report
by Dennis Stoesz
October 7, 1998

The Archives has collected records from churches which belong to the Illinois Mennonite Conference (1872) since the archives was founded in 1937. One major emphasis has been to collect church bulletins from each church since bulletins began to be used on a regular basis in 1948. These bulletins form the largest quantitative part of each church's collection. Since the 1950s, churches have produced many more types of records, like newsletters, church directories, annual reports, etc. Conference Historian Edwin J. Stalter has been instrumental in collecting some of these materials, especially from the 1960s-80s, and depositing them in the Archives.

Older church records have also been collected and added to the appropriate collection through-out these years. The earliest records include the Record Book, 1854-1884, from the Hopewell Mennonite Church, and the Record Book, 1858-1962, from the Cullom Mennonite Church. The bulk of the older records date from the 1890s-1950s.

In 1992 the Historical Committee of the Mennonite Church directed congregations belonging to Illinois Mennonite Conference to deposit their church records at the regional Mennonite archives located at Metamora, Illinois - so churches now deposit their church bulletins and records there.

The summary of congregational records below provides a good indication of materials found in each church's collection. Please note, however, that the summary is not complete since titles of specific files (inventories) have not yet been completed for every church. The list also reflects only paper records, since time did not permit to check the photographs, tapes or artifacts, which are often cataloged as separate archival units. I should also note that other relevant background materials for specific churches may exist as part of other collections in the Archives. For example, in a pastor's collection, or in the Illinois Mennonite Conference collection. This list also does not indicate archival records which are found with the individual congregations, or with the archives at Metamora.

This list of congregations and their church records was produced to evaluate the effectiveness of managing, collecting and preserving congregational records by the Archives, the Historical Committees and the individual churches.
Based on this listing, I would like to report the following:

Congregations actively depositing in Goshen Archives (in 1992):  11
Note that in 1992 there was a shift in policy, where Illinois
congregations were asked to deposit at the archives at
Metamora, Illinois.

Congregations with collections but are not depositing (in 1992):  17
Congregations which have not deposited materials (list of 1997):  23
Extinct congregations (or no longer part of Illinois Conference which     have collections at the Goshen Archives):  28
Congregations in Illinois belonging to another conference (IA-NE):
   Templo Alabanza Menonita, Moline, Illinois
 1
Dual affiliated congregations (MC / GC):  13
Sending in materials in 1992 (4); Inactive (2); Sending none (7)
 Total number of congregations:  51

Smith (Scottdale, Pennsylvania: Herald Press, 1983); in The Black Mennonite Church in North America, 1886-1986, by Le Roy Behler (Scottdale, Pennsylvania: Herald Press, 1986); in The Hispanic Mennonite Church in North America, 1932-1982, by Rafael Falcon (Scottdale, Pennsylvania: Herald Press, 1986); and in the Centennial History of the Mennonites in Illinois, by Harry F.
